Sociolinguistics is a sub-discipline of linguistics that studies the relationship between language and society. In other words, sociolinguistics studies the use and use of language, the place of use of language, grammar, the various consequences of contact with two or more languages, and the variety and timing of users of different languages. Apart from that, this science also explains why people speak differently in different social contexts. Studying how people use language in different social contexts can provide a lot of knowledge about how language works in society; especially with regard to social relations in a community, and the way people convey and construct aspects of their social identity through the language they use. In other words, sociolinguistics is the study of differences or variations in the language used in society as speakers for interaction and communication, whose existence is influenced by culture in the way language is used.

Why do we need to study language in relation to society?
There is a strong relationship between language and society, and this justifies the need to learn language in relation to society. Wherever we are, one of the most important things is communication, and the way we establish good and correct communication, we must understand language. In Indonesia, there are many languages, therefore it is important for us to understand a language in each area. Starting from how to pronounce it, how to choose vocabulary, etc. The science that studies it is sociolinguistics.
