The language with the most native speakers in Taiwan is Taiwanese Hokkien which is spoken by about 70% of the population. Hokkien is a local dialect of the Chinese variety that originated in southern Fujian and is spoken by many Chinese people through monitoring throughout Southeast Asia. Recently there has been a growing use of Taiwanese Hokkien in media broadcasting. Formosan is the ethnic language of the original inhabitants of Taiwan, including about 2% of the island's population. It is common for young and middle-aged Hakka and indigenous peoples to speak Mandarin and Hokkien better, or to the discretion of, their ethnic languages. People who emigrated from mainland China after 1949 (12% of the population) mostly spoke Mandarin. Standard Chinese is the official language and is almost commonly used and practiced. It has been the only medium approved by schools in Taiwan since the late 1940s, after the handover of Taiwan to the Republic of China government in 1945.
Actually, there are so many regional languages in Taiwan, even Taiwan has tried to maintain the regional language because only a few live in the area. So that the language is not known to many people out there. From the information I got. My friend who lives in Taiwan said that most Taiwanese people speak Mandarin, if there is a foreigner living in Taiwan, then the foreigner speaks English as the universal language. It turns out that speaking English in Taiwan is less understood by Taiwanese. In Taiwan, few people understand English, so if there are foreigners living in Taiwan, that foreigner must learn Taiwanese, which is Mandarin as a mother tongue.
In the social life in Taiwan, there is little difficulty for Taiwanese to communicate well with foreigners. But for Taiwan itself, the socialization is good because Mandarin is the language that must be used there.
