Journal article can be challenging to read, but most contain many of the same components, once you understand the structure of each article, understanding the content is much simpler.
Journal articles normally contain the following parts. For each part, try to indentify the following:
Abstract The abstract is normally one paragraph that appears before the article. The abstract provides a summary of the entire article You should read it carefully to determine the following : ▪ What topic are the authors studying? ▪ What was their primary finding? In the journal that I have read, the content of abstract already answered the question above. The answer are, the topic are ‘The objectives of the research are to determine the effects of teaching methods (STAD and jigsaw) and learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) on students’ English achievement’ and primary finding is ‘The research also find out that for visual students, studying English achievement of students taught with STAD is better than that of students taught with jigsaw; for auditory students, learning English achievement of students taught with jigsaw is better than that of students taught with STAD; and for kinesthetic students, English achievement of students taught with STAD is better than that of students taught with jigsaw’.
Methods The methods section follows the literature review. It can often be identified because it will have a title of “methods” or “methodology”. The methods section provides information about the individuals that the authors studied and the way that they conducted theair analysis. You should read it carefully to determine the following : ▪ Who were the participants in this sample? ▪ ▪ ▪ What makes them unique? ▪ Is the sample a good representation of the entire population? If not, how are they different ? Is the study qualitative(based on interviews, ethnography, participants observation, or content analysis), quantitative (based on statistical analysis), or multi-method (includes both qualitative and quantitative analysis) Please note: you are not expected to understand the exact methodology used to analyze the study, but you should be able to answer above question In the journal that I have read, the content of Methods alrady answerd the question above. The answer are, the participants in this sample conducted at Junior High School Pasangkayu in 2014 with 213 sample which is selected stratified-randomly (n = 68). The affordable population of research is all students of class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Pasangkayu odd semester of academic year 2013/2014 consisting of 213 students. The sample of the study was 60 students, randomly stratified from the affordable population at 1% error level. Their unique of the participants is each student has its own unique and unique learning style so that an absolute teacher is aware of this difference. However, teachers generally teach by the way they are taught. Many teachers, consciously or unconsciously, try to match or exceed the teacher who inspires them when they become students and choose methods that reflect the way they like to learn. The method of study is multi-method.
Result The results section follows the methods. It will often have the title “results” or “findings” The results section provides information about what the authors found when they analyzed theair data. You should read it carefully to determine the following: ▪ What were some authors’ main findings? ▪ Please note: you are note expected to be able to read the tables/graphs or to understand the numbers provided by the authors. Instead, you should focus on the text of the result section. The authors’ main findings of the result in the journal that I have read is Hypothesis 6 test results obtained Q-count value of 6.498 exceeded the value of Q-table (0.05: 1/144) 3.92 so there is evidence to reject H0 and receive H1 which means there is a significant difference between μA1B3 and μA2B3. Because μA1B3> μA2B3 (70,08> 64,48) it can be concluded that the English writing ability of kinesthetic students given holistic tasks is significantly better than those assigned discrete task.
Conclusion/Discussion
The conclusion or discussion sections follows the result section. It will often have the title “conclusion” or “discussion” The conclusion or discussion section summarize the authors’ main findings and explains why the findings are so important. You should read it carefully to determine the following:
▪ What were the athors’ overall findings?
▪ Why are these findings important?
▪ What limitations of the study do the authors identify (if any)?
▪ What suggestions for future research do the authors make (if any)?
The content of conclusion or discussion in this journal that I have read alrady answered the question above. The authors’ overall findings are (1) STAD method is more effective than jigsaw method in improving English learning outcomes; (2) learning styles do not affect English learning outcomes; (3) STAD method is more suitable for improving learning outcomes of students' visual English and kinesthetic students; and (4) the jigsaw method, appropriate for improving English students' learning outcomes. These are findings important (1) because the learning outcomes of English can be improved by the use of appropriate learning methods it is important to present the learning materials using appropriate learning methods; (2) because every student has their own preference in learning, that there are some students who can only learn well if the learning materials are presented gradually from easy to difficult but there are students prefer the less difficult and challenging subject matter, so that in the practice of learning teachers need to provide more varied learning materials; (3) to developers and designers of English resource books, it is also advisable to design material materials that enable the use of varied methods.
