Studying abroad is the dream of many children of the archipelago. According to Jessica Magaziner, a Research Associate from World Education News Reviews, education in Taiwan has experienced rapid growth, over the past 30 years. From the mid-1980s to 1996, the Taiwanese government approved a new private educational institution. This became even faster, when president Chen Shui Bian who served until 2008 fulfilled his campaign promises, which wanted to build campuses in each region. Until 2014, the campus growth rate in Taiwan was 66 percent.
Education in Taiwan The education system in Taiwan consists of 6 years of basic education, 3 years of junior high school education, and 3 years of high school education. Upper secondary education, including vocational education in it, as well as vocational schools in Indonesia. At the tertiary level, there are universities, institutes, and graduate schools. The language of instruction used is Mandarin Chinese. The academic year runs from September, until June the following year. Similar to the education system in Indonesia, compulsory education for 12 years. Starting from elementary, middle, high school or vocational school. But before entering elementary school, parents can register their children in PAUD or TK.
The education system in Taiwan, prioritizing the fields of mathematics and science. But lately, this has been criticized because it is considered to be too focused on memorization, so it is considered expelling graduates who are less creative. Compulsory education is carried out for up to nine years, until junior high school level. Since 2014, the government implemented 12 years of compulsory education, up to the high school level. To undergo a period of transition, the government carried out several reforms. Among them is making a free exam policy at the high school level, decentralizing the curriculum, creating quality early childhood education, providing subsidies and strengthening support for underprivileged students, improving vocational programs, developing arts education, and promoting e-learning.
At the high school level, when students sit in grades 10 and 11, they will receive core subjects, such as: Chinese and English, Citizenship, Philosophy which certainly leads to Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Then there are history, geography, mathematics, basic science, physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, physical education, music, fine arts, industrial arts, home economics, and military training. When in the 12th grade, Taiwanese students are allowed to choose a specialization in the social sciences, or natural / engineering sciences. On the other hand, vocational schools offer a pathway to employment, by providing additional specialist education, such as: civil engineering, electricity, computers, or business. In general, vocational schools in Taiwan offer basic technical skills in industry, technology, trade, marine products, agriculture, nursing and midwifery, home economics, opera and arts. However, they can still take the entrance examination to the University to take a bachelor's degree for four years. In the education system in Indonesia, high school is divided into 3 majors, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Languages. The subject depends on the majors of each class. As for SMKs, basic technical skills in industry, technology, trade, marine products, agriculture, nursing and midwifery, household economics. And in the Indonesian education system there is no military training.
College Entrance Test To get into tertiary institutions, the Taiwanese government offers several routes l.
First, it is a Performance-based pathway, which is a combination of subject competency test results and Designated Subject (s) Examination. Subject competency tests, are several tests conducted within 100 minutes on subjects such as: Chinese, English, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences. While the Designated Subject (s) Examination, is intended to test the depth of knowledge in a particular specialization, which is obtained from 1-3 subjects.
The second entrance, through Recommendation- and performance-based. In this case, high school can recommend their students to one of the Faculties on a particular campus. Students, then take the subject competency test there. Then the Faculty can choose to be accompanied by additional tests, such as interview tests or additional assessments in other forms.
Next is the Self-selection route, where students can apply to the Faculty separately. That is, do not register collectively with their school. The selection process is applied, referring to tests that are similar to the Recommendation-and performance-based pathway. Almost the same as the system in Indonesia. There are 3 test paths to entering universities in Indonesia:
1. Path value report card
2. Writing test track (soshum, science, or mix) 3. Independent pathway, prospective students apply directly to the desired University. The test is a written test.
